Fact Check: Did coronavirus originate from blood cells in the laboratory

A video claiming to show how Coronavirus ‘originated from blood’ cells in a laboratory is going viral on the video-sharing platform TikTok. The video shows a drop of blood on a glass slide, which can be seen multiplying into several droplets in a matter of mere seconds. The Bangla caption accompanying the claim says “The way coronavirus was originated from this blood”.  Newschecker has found the claim to be false.

The video, shared by TikTok user Ariyan Sk AL-Amin on March 18, has over a million views and over 35,000 likes.

Coronavirus & The Lab Leak Theory

The controversial lab leak theory says the coronavirus has been engineered at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) laboratory in Wuhan, China where the very first cases of Covid-19 were reported. Later, World Health Organization investigated the claim and concluded with the statement “extremely unlikely”.

Fact Check/ Verification

To find out more about the viral video, Newschecker conducted a reverse image search on the keyframes of the video, which led us to a YouTube video titled  “Lunar water: Water that multiplies || Drama ~ The Silent Sea || Korean drama“.

The video was uploaded on January 12, 2022. On watching the video, we found it to be exactly the same as the Tiktok video from 6 seconds to 16 seconds.

Taking a clue from this video, we conducted a keyword search with the words “The Silent Sea Blood Scene”  and found that it referred to a laboratory scene from the fourth episode of the Korean drama “The Silent Sea” on Netflix released in 2021. The fourth episode of the series, titled “The Truth Comes Out” matches the laboratory scene from 26:09 seconds to 26:16 seconds.
