Fact Check: Viral Video Falsely Claims Bangladesh Army Staged Coup Against Dr. Muhammad Yunus

Claim – Military coup against Dr Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh
Fact– The video is of an old event and not linked to any military coup

A video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) depicts soldiers and civilians, accompanied by claims that the Bangladesh Army has staged a coup against the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Additional assertions include the 9th Infantry Division’s deployment to Dhaka, the mobilisation of troops by the Army Chief, and clashes between Mujahideen students and the Army Chief regarding pro-India Hasina.

See the posts here- (1, 2 & 3).

Newschecker verified that the claim is false.

Fact Check/ Verification

We verified these claims by conducting video keyframe and reverse image searches. These investigations revealed that the video is old footage from the Dhanmondi-32 demolition event on February 5, 2025.

In the videos, you will hear the crowd booing the army, saying, ‘Bhuyaa! Bhuyaa!’ Relevant keywords and reverse image searches led us to multiple videos that matched the viral video. See the videos here, here and here.

All these videos were uploaded on February 5 2025.  We also found a report published by Pratidiner Bangladesh on their official YouTube channel on February 5, 2025. See the report here.

On February 5, 2025, a crowd assembled in front of Sheikh Hasina’s childhood home, Dhanmondi House 32. The crowd eventually destroyed the building. A group of soldiers had been dispatched to Dhanmondi 32 to control the situation, but the crowd forced them to leave. As the soldiers retreated, the crowd jeered them, chanting, “Bhuyaa! Bhuyaa!”See reports here—The Daily Campus, Jagonews24.

Again, the current situation in Bangladesh is stable. Bangladesh Army chief is on good terms with the Dr Muhammad Yunus-led interim government. Recently, the Chief of Army met the Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus and briefed him about the country’s recent condition of Law and order. Dr Muhammad Yunus is now in China for his first bilateral meeting with the president of China.

Therefore, the video is from a completely different event and has nothing to do with any military coup against the army.

Conclusion:

The claim is false, as evidenced by similar videos. The viral video, showing the demolition of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house in Dhanmondi-32 on February 5, 2025, is unrelated to any military coup against Bangladesh’s interim government.

Result: False
