Fact check: Viral claim saying Bangladesh Army will take charge of the  national election is false

Claim– Bangladesh Army has approved the caretaker government system for the election of 2024
Fact- There will be no caretaker government for the upcoming election.

A viral post is circulating with a claim that says, ‘Bangladesh Army has approved the caretaker government system to be established within 3 months’ on social media. See the post here- Tiktok, Youtube.  

Newschecker-Bangladesh has verified this claim to be false.

Fact-check

With Google keyword & video keyframe searches Newschecker-Bangladesh has discovered that it’s an old video where the former chief of army staff, Bangladesh Army, General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq, is signing a document on his farewell. The article on caretaker government has been repealed from the constitution.

In the Tik Tok video, we see an army officer signing a document and handing it over to another officer. And the caption says that the Bangladesh Army has approved the caretaker government system, and within three months, the ruling party will step down from power.

The viral video

The video is from 2018, where former Chief of Army General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq is seen signing off from his post on his farewell ceremony. He handed it over to his successor General Aziz. See the video here- Nagorik Tv

General Shafiul Huq served the Bangladesh Army as the Chief of Army Staff from  2015 to 2018, while General Aziz served from 2018 to 2021. The list can be seen here: Chief of Army Staff. 

The truth about caretaker govt

The caretaker government system was abolished from the constitution in the last and last month of this year. The ruling party has declared no chance of re-establishing the interim government system while meeting the U.S. ambassador. See reports here- Dhaka Tribune, Prothom Alo

Conclusion:

Therefore, the Bangladesh Army did not give any approval to the caretaker government for the coming national election.
