Fact Check: Old and Unrelated Video Circulated With False Claims That Sheikh Hasina Appeared  in an Indian Hospital

Claim

Recently, a video spread on TikTok claiming that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made her first public appearance in India. The video further stated that she was brought to a hospital in India under tight security. See the post here. 

Newschecker has verified the claim and found it false.

Fact

A reverse image search was conducted using keyframes from the video to verify the truth. This search led to a video uploaded on Prothom Alo’s YouTube channel on September 19, 2016, titled “প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা নিউইয়র্কে” (Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New York).

The video in question was found to be similar to the video being circulated with the recent claim. Subsequently, a report published in Prothom Alo on September 16, 2016, revealed that the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina undertook an 11-day state visit to Canada and the United States in 2016. During this visit, she participated in the Fifth Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund (GF) in Montreal, Canada, and the United Nations General Assembly session in New York, USA.

Therefore, this video has no connection to Sheikh Hasina’s current presence in India.

Thus, a video of Sheikh Hasina’s presence in New York in 2016 has been distorted and recently used to falsely claim that she has made a public appearance in India for medical treatment, which is false.
