Claim: This is a disturbing scene of a Hindu man getting lynched in Bangladesh.
Fact: The viral video shows a Muslim businessman being lynched in Bangladesh
A person is being brutally stoned to death -his horrific video recently went viral on social media. Many on social media claimed that the person being killed in the video is a Hindu residing in Bangladesh.
A reverse image search of a keyframe from the viral video shows that on July 12, a Bangladeshi news portal named Maasranga News posted a report with the same video on their Facebook page. The accompanying text read: “Allegation by relatives of the main 3 accused being excluded in the murder case of Sohag in Mitford!” The report stated that a businessman from Barguna, Lal Chand alias Sohag, was brutally stoned to death in front of gate number three of Mitford Hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for not paying extortion money. The video of this gruesome incident went viral on social media. In the video report, the victim’s relatives, including Bithi Akter (niece of the deceased), Lucky Akter (wife of the deceased), and Monjuara Begum (sister of the deceased), expressed their anger, accusing the police of excluding the names of the main culprits from the FIR. Following this lead, a keyword search on the internet revealed related reports published on July 12 by The Daily Star & Bangla Vision news websites. These reports indicated that after a small funeral prayer, the deceased businessman Lal Chand alias Sohag was buried next to his mother Alea Begum‘s grave in Raybhog village, Barguna Sadar Upazila.
Mohammad Moniruzzaman, OC of Kotwali Police Station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told Prothom Alo that the police and RAB had arrested four people in connection with the murder. Operations are underway to arrest the remaining individuals. The report stated that among the four arrested, one is Mahmudul Hasan alias Mohin, a Juba Dal leader in the area, and the second is Tareque Rahman alias Robin. The names of the other two are unknown.
The names of the deceased’s relatives, as reported by various Bangladeshi news outlets, are not typical of Hindu individuals. Furthermore, the deceased being buried is also a custom for Muslims.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Indian English news outlets like India Today, Republic TV, Wion News & NDTV, and Bengali news outlet TV9 Bangla also reported on the incident. They claimed that the deceased person in Mitford, Dhaka, Bangladesh, was Hindu.
However, the Fact Check Division of the Press Wing of Bangladesh’s Interim Government clearly stated that the claim made by the Indian media was completely false. The deceased, Lal Chand alias Sohag, is not Hindu, but Muslim.
Based on these findings, our report has been updated. The title and cover image of this report have been changed.
It is clear from this that the viral video is not of oppression against a Hindu individual in Bangladesh. The deceased is Muslim.
