Claim– UN will intervene to bring back Sheikh Hasina.
Fact– The original video does not contain such information.

A video has been circulating on the social media platform TikTok for some time, claiming that UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the UN would intervene with its security forces to oust Dr. Yunus and reinstall the Hasina government if power is not handed over within 25 days.

The caption of the video claims, “The Rule of the illegal occupier Yunus in Bangladesh is about to end!! After an emergency UN meeting on the situation in Bangladesh today, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric held an emergency press conference. He stated that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forcibly ousted in Bangladesh in the name of the quota movement. Stéphane Dujarric further added that Dr. Yunus has illegally seized power for the past year with a meticulous plan, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people, especially a genocide against Awami League supporters by the Yunus administration. He also stated that if Dr. Yunus does not hand over power to the President within the next 25 days, Sheikh Hasina will be brought back to the country with the help of UN security forces.”

Fact Check/ Verification

To verify the claim that the UN would bring Sheikh Hasina back to the country if Dr. Yunus does not hand over power within 25 days, we initially conducted a reverse image search. Our search led us to a video on the official UN YouTube channel with the same content.

The original video, found during our search, was published on August 3, 2024, under the title ‘UN chief ‘remains deeply concerned about the situation in Bangladesh: spokesman.’ According to the information in the video, Stéphane Dujarric, on behalf of the UN Secretary-General, expressed extreme concern about the attacks on protesting students in Bangladesh during the July-August coup last year.

The entire 40-second original video is used in the viral clip. The key part is as follows: ‘and I can tell you that the Secretary General remains deeply concerned about the situation in Bangladesh. He notes the reports of the resumption of student protests today and reiterates his call for calm and restraint. The Secretary General is concerned about reported Mass arrests of thousands of young people and political opposition in connection with the current student movement. He is also alarmed by emerging reports about the excessive use of force by security forces and credible evidence of human rights violations.’

In other words, there was no information in the UN spokesperson’s address about Dr. Yunus handing over power within 25 days or bringing Sheikh Hasina back to the country. Furthermore, the video was published on August 3, 2024, before Sheikh Hasina’s flight from the Bangladesh. You can watch the video here

It is worth noting that on August 5 of last year, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country and took refuge in India following a mass uprising. Subsequently, on August 8, an interim government was formed with Dr. Muhammad Yunus as its head, which remains in effect to this day.

Conclusion:

Thus, the viral video claiming the UN would use its security forces to bring back Hasina contains no such information. Instead, the video expresses concern about the instability during last year’s mass uprising.
