Newschecker’s investigation reveals that this claim is false.

Facts

An investigation has revealed that the claim of a ban on all Indian satellite channels in Bangladesh is false. Multiple reliable sources have confirmed this.

On November 28, 2024, the Indian channel Republic Bangla published a report on their official YouTube and Facebook page claiming that all Indian channels have been banned in Bangladesh. This report subsequently triggered the spread of this claim.

Firstly, all Indian satellite channels are currently broadcasting in Bangladesh. No news of any broadcast ban in any region has been found.

Furthermore, Newschecker contacted the Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB) office and was assured that this claim was completely false. The COAB’s office secretary, Iqbal Hossain, further stated that they have not received any such decision from the relevant ministries of the Government of Bangladesh. Moreover, no such notification has been found on the Bangladesh Ministry of Information and Communication Technology websites and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

It is worth noting that in December last year, Syeda Shaheen Ara Laili, a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking a ban on the broadcasting of Indian channels. Subsequently, on December 15, the High Court bench of Justice Fatima Nazib and Justice Sikdar Mahmudur Razi adjourned the writ petition and scheduled a hearing for January after the vacation. As per the latest information, no hearing has been held on this matter. See the report here – Somoy News & Independent Television.
