A video claiming that Afghan cricketer Mohammad Shehzad’s mother passed away while he was in Dubai for the T20 World Cup is going viral on TikTok. A fact check by Newschecker has found the claim to be false. The video has been viewed around 490K times and has 103K Likes so far.

On a keyword search, we found a report in the Indian media ABP Live regarding the death of Mohammad Shehzad’s mother, published on December 24, 2020. The report carries a condolence message from the official page of Afghan cricketer Rashid Khan.
On running another keyword search in English and Pashto on Facebook, Newschecker found similar posts on the official Facebook page of Afghan national cricketers Mohammad Nabi, Samiullah Shinwari, and Mirwais Ashraf, mourning the death of Mohammad Shehzad’s mother.
The news regarding Mohammad Shehzad’s mother’s death = was also found in a tweet published on December 23, 2020, on the Twitter account of Ariana News, an Afghan-based media outlet.
The mother of Afghan cricketer Mohammad Shehzad died in December 2020, not during the 2021 T20 World Cup.
