A video circulating on social media depicts a woman crawling and attempting to flee from a crowd. The accompanying claim alleges that a mob in Bangladesh raped a Hindu woman, and nobody intervened. The incident took place on December 26 in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, where a mob assaulted the woman and her associates due to accusations of theft.
The video shows the woman emerging from a bush and trying to escape, with a crowd present but not offering assistance.
The video has been shared with a caption that falsely claims, “Several people are raping a Bangladeshi Hindu woman and then making a video of her. Not even one man came to save her and our government is sending rice to feed the Bangladeshi dogs. This is too much.”See the posts here, here and here.
Newschecker has verified the claim and found it to be false.
Factcheck/Verification
Upon conducting several keyword searches based on the information in the viral claim we found a report published on December 27, 2024, on the Bangladeshi news outlet, Somoy News. The report contained visuals from the viral video.
A mob in Kahindi village, Narayanganj district, Bangladesh, killed a suspected car thief and beat another on December 26th. The incident occurred when a group of 7-8 thieves attempted to steal a car and were chased by villagers. While most of the thieves escaped, two – Bilal and Lovely – were caught. Bilal was beaten to death by the mob, while Lovely survived by jumping into a nearby canal. Police later recovered Bilal’s body and rescued Lovely. According to Assistant SP Mehndi Islam, a case has been filed against Lovely at Araihajar police station.
However, the report did not specify whether the woman was Muslim or Hindu. Therefore, we contacted Golam Rabbani Shimul, a Prothom Alo journalist from the Narayanganj district. He contacted the Circle SP of Narayanganj and Lovely’s neighbours in Araihajar, who confirmed that Lovely is Muslim her father’s name is Idris Ali, and she resides in Tilchandi, Araihajar. During this time, the Circle SP also mentioned that Lovely was admitted to Araihajar Health Complex after being rescued.
Conclusion:
Our investigation has revealed that the claim being made along with the viral video is completely false. The woman seen in the video is Muslim, not Hindu.
