A social media video has gone viral claiming that Monica Yunus, the daughter of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, was arrested in the USA for drunk driving. The video’s captions contain derogatory remarks about Dr. Yunus and his daughter. In the videos, you can see a woman captured by police who was driving a car. While verifying the claim we conducted video keyframe searches and several keyword searches that revealed a video of a woman named Monica who was arrested in Verona, New Jersey, USA. She was arrested on April 16, 2022. The YouTube video was uploaded 3 months ago titled ‘Drunk Woman Crashes her Car After a Breakup in Verona, New Jersey.’
The video descriptions on YouTube write up the whole story. The story summarises, ‘Monica, a woman in Verona, New Jersey, was arrested for DUI in 2022. She was pulled over after a car accident and exhibited signs of intoxication. She refused to take a breathalyser test. She was later found guilty of DUI and refusal to submit to a chemical test. She was sentenced to use an ignition interlock device, attend an intoxicated driver resource centre, and pay fines.’
On the Other hand, Monica Yunus is a Bangladeshi-American soprano artist, advocate and social entrepreneur. See her profiles here- website, FB ID. Compared and found that these two women are completely different. Individuals.
In the viral video and the source on YouTube, the woman identified herself as ‘Monica.’ Dr. Yunus’s daughter’s name is also Monica Yunus which led the misinformation to go viral.
Conclusion
Hence the woman named Monica seen in the viral video and Monica Yunus, the daughter of Dr. Yunus, are two different individuals. Therefore, the claim that the viral clip shows Dr Yunus’s daughter arrested for drunk driving in the US is false.
