Bangladesh is not cancelling international flights

A Tiktok video, claiming that Bangladesh is going to suspend international flights is going viral on social media platform with nearly  23 thousand likes over 452 thousand views in the past 12 days.  Newschecker has found that the video, uploaded on November 28, is misleading. 

Fact Check/ Verification

In the video, the news presenter is saying that to stop the spread of the Omicron variant in Bangladesh, the National Technical Advisory Committee has recommended restricting international flights with the infected countries.

After the key-frame search of this video, we found the video is taken out from a news clip that was uploaded on November 28 on the Youtube channel of Jamuna News. The Tiktok content has used the first nine seconds of the beginning of the video titled, “Advisory committee concerned with ‘Omicron’, suggests banning flights from other countries.”

The committee was recommended to restrict flights with infected countries to prevent the spread of a new variant of the coronavirus. Various media outlets including Dhaka Post, Daily Star, Dhaka Tribune has also published the news on the recommendations of the National Technical Advisory Committee.

But a final decision on the matter is pending before the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism ministry.

In other words, Bangladesh has not issued any directive to ban flights with the rest of the world.

The Department of Health has issued 15 guidelines to prevent the new variant of Corona in Bangladesh on November 28 where it’s mandatory for passengers from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and other affected countries to stay in 14 days quarantine and go through with the screening at the airport.  

Conclusion

Bangladesh has not banned international flights with the rest of the world, and the claim is misleading.
